Questions to Ask Before You Borrow or Buy on Credit
Credit can help you acquire something valuable sooner, but it always has a cost. Asking the right questions before you commit protects your income and your peace of mind.
1. Who is the lender, and are they licensed?
Ask for the full name of the institution that provides the money and for proof that it is licensed to lend. Be clear who you are dealing with at every stage.
2. What is the total I will repay?
Ask for the full repayment figure, including interest, fees and any insurance, not just the monthly instalment.
3. What is the interest rate, and how is it calculated?
Find out whether the rate is fixed or can change, and whether it applies to the full amount or the reducing balance.
4. What fees apply?
Ask about administration, processing, late payment and early settlement fees. Get each one named and priced.
5. What happens if I miss a payment?
Ask about penalties, how long before action is taken and how to arrange a revised plan if your situation changes.
6. Can I settle early, and what will it cost?
Some agreements allow early settlement without penalty and some do not. Know before you sign.
7. How will repayments be collected?
For salary or pension deductions, ask exactly how much is deducted, when, and what happens to the deduction if your pay changes.
8. Is there any security or guarantor?
Understand whether the lender can claim an asset if you default, and what a guarantor would be responsible for.
9. Do I really need this now?
Compare the cost of buying on credit with saving for a short while, and check that the product comes with a warranty and after-sales support.
10. Have I received everything in writing?
Do not sign until you have the full agreement, and keep a copy.
A note on "0% deposit"
A 0% deposit offer means you do not pay an upfront deposit. It does not mean the arrangement is free. Always ask for the full repayment schedule so you can see the complete cost over the period.
Warning signs
- Pressure to sign immediately
- Reluctance to put terms in writing
- Claims of guaranteed approval
- Large unexplained fees before any approval
- A lender who will not name the institution providing the funds
If something feels unclear, pause and ask. A reputable provider will be glad to explain. For preparation tips, see our loan application checklist.
